Chennai also known as Madras, the official name until 1996 is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, it is one of the largest cultural, economic and educational centers of south India. According to the 2011 Indian census, it is the sixth-most populous city and fourth-most populous urban agglomeration in India. The city together with the adjoining regions constitutes the Chennai Metropolitan Area, which is the 36th-largest urban area by population in the world. The traditional and de facto gateway of South India, Chennai is among the most-visited Indian cities by foreign tourists. It was ranked the 43rd-most visited city in the world for the year 2015 and was ranked the 36th-most visited city in the world for the year 2019. The Quality of Living Survey rated Chennai as the safest city in India. Chennai attracts 45 percent of health tourists visiting India, and 30 to 40 percent of domestic health tourists. As such, it is termed “India’s health capital”. Chennai has the fifth-largest urban economy of India.
Kanchipuram, also known as Kanchi or Kancheepuram, is a temple city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu in Tondaimandalam region, 72 km (45 mi) from Chennai – the capital of Tamil Nadu. The city covers an area of 11.605 km2 (4.481 sq mi) and had a population of 164,265 in 2011. It is the administrative headquarters of Kanchipuram District. Kanchipuram is well-connected by road and rail. Kanchipuram is a Tamil word formed by combining two words “Kanchi” and “-puram” meaning “Brahma” and “residential place” respectively and located on the banks of the Vegavathy River. Kanchipuram has been ruled by the Pallavas, the Medieval Cholas, the Later Cholas, the Later Pandyas, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Carnatic kingdom, and the British, who called the city “Conjeeveram”.
Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is a town in Chengalpattu district in the southeastern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, best known for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of 7th- and 8th-century Hindu Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram. It is one of the famous tourist sites in India. Mahabalipuram was one of two major port cities in the Pallava kingdom. The town was named after Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, who was also known as Mahabali. Along with economic prosperity, it became the site of a group of royal monuments, many carved out of the living rock. These are dated to the 7th and 8th centuries: rathas (temples in the form of chariots), mandapas (cave sanctuaries), the giant open-air rock relief the Descent of the Ganges, and the Shore Temple dedicated to Shiva. The contemporary town plan was established by the British Raj in 1827.
Pondicherry, officially known as Puducherry, and commonly referred to as just pondy, is one of the seven Union Territories of India which is bounded by the southern state of Tamil Nadu. This former French colony is a perfect amalgamation of the traditional Indian sensibilities and French architecture, making it a dreamy escape that offers the best of both worlds. The streets of the French Quarter of Pondicherry, also known as White Town, are dotted with charming mustard-yellow colonial structures with bougainvillaea laden walls. These are interspersed with cosy cafes and chic boutiques that offer delectable French cuisine and beverages. Simply strolling down these streets, can give the traveller an insight into the fairytale charm of Pondicherry.

By Air:
Chennai International Airport, situated around 20 km away from the city centre, is among the busiest airports in the country. Spread across uptown regions of Meenambakkam, Tirusulam and Pallavaram, the airport has been recorded to have handled more than 342 airplane movements on a day to day basis. While the Kamaraj Terminal here is dedicated to all domestic flights of Air India and GoAir, the Anna Terminal serves international flights of Lufthansa, Oman Air, Singapore Airline, Emirates, SpiceJet, Jet Airways and IndiGo, among others. These airlines connect Chennai with prime Indian as well as foreign cities such as Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Dubai, Singapore, Frankfurt and Muscat, to list a few. After reaching the airport, travellers can hire taxis to reach anywhere in Chennai.
By Train:
Chennai Central (MAS) and Chennai Egmore (MS) are the two main railway stations in Chennai connecting the city with major Indian destinations like Delhi, Cochin, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad, and most of the other big Indian cities. The Egmore station mainly provides services from most of the places in Tamil Nadu along with some of the other important cities outside. From outside both the stations, travellers can hire prepaid taxis or take auto rickshaws to reach anywhere in the city.
By Road:
Chennai is well linked with several nearby cities and towns via decent motorable roads. The city is also home to Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus or CMBT (11 km from city centre), which is one of the largest bus stations in the country, sprawling across an area of about 37 acres. There are various national highways connecting Chennai with Trichy (330 km), Bangalore (350 km), Coimbatore (500 km) and Tiruvallur (50km), among others.
Summer (March-May)
Chennai‘s summers are very hot and humid, thanks to the proximity of the sea coast, which has led to the city fondly being called ‘hot, hotter, hottest Chennai.’ May is the month of ‘Agni Nakshatra’ or the firestar and the month is more sweltering and sweaty than the rest of the summer months. Schools are closed and most people head to the hill stations, or to the beaches and swimming pools in the evenings. But Chennai has the advantage of being under a sea breeze that turns the nights cool. Summer’s off season so you can expect good deals in accommodation. Wear cool cottons, carry an umbrella and stay hydrated on water, tender coconuts and watermelons. Temperature averages between 28°C-40°C.
Monsoon (June-November)
Southwest monsoon begins in June with little showers and less humid weather. As the southwest passes on, the northeast monsoon descends on Chennai by October with heavy rains and still heavier flooding. Chennai being at the coasts is also prone to floods and cyclonic storms during this period. The city is off season during monsoon, as low lying areas get inundated and roads turn slushy. But if you must travel, carry an umbrella and a raincoat. Average temperature would be 23°C-35°C.
Winter (December-February)
Winter is pleasant here, with a cool breeze blowing in from the seacoast that helps rather considerably to remove the heat. Mornings are cooler and foggy, and the day time skies are clear. There might be occasional rain showers in December, so keep umbrellas and raincoats handy. Chennaites celebrate Winter with a music and dance festival in December and Pongal in January. Winter is the perfect and most idyllic time to go exploring the city and indulge in adventure sports. You find a number of birds migrating to Chennai’s lakes during winter. It’s a great time for birdwatchers and shutterbugs. Temperature ranges from 21°C-31°C.
