Guwahati
The capital city of Assam, is one of the leading tourist spots, and the main entry for the entire region. It is extended over the Brahmaputra river and holds a large number of temples including Kamakhya temple, Nabagraha temple, Umananda temple, etc., Assam zoo, Botanical garden, and Assam State Museum. Kamakhya Temple in Assam is a seat of Tantric Buddhism in India. Mythologically, Lord Vishnu severed the corpse of the goddess Parvati into pieces with Sudarshan Chakra while Lord Shiva was carrying wildly her dead body. Legends reveal that her yoni or vagina fell here making it one of the most sacred Shaktipithas. Kaziranga National Park is famous for great one-horned rhinoceros, Asian elephants, giant water buffaloes, sambars, gaurs, and Indian tigers. It covers a total area of about 430 sq. km.
Cherrapunji
When it rains, it really pours… or so one would say about Cherrapunji, which is considered to be the wettest place on earth (receiving an annual rainfall of 11,777 mm). The little town also has much to offer any traveller who is starved for a little beauty and wonder. Here is where you will find the fascinating double decker root bridge, crafted from nature’s best materials. You can gaze upon the plains of Bangladesh from Cherrapunji. Absorb the roar and rush of the fourth largest set of waterfalls in India – the Seven Sisters – as they cascade down the cliffs. There’s so much to see, you will wish you planned a longer trip. One of the most popular attractions of Mawlynnong village is The Sky View which is the vantage point. This site has a viewing tower which is eighty five feet high and completely out of bamboo. The landscape of Bangladesh is visible from atop the tower, as this village is situated on the Indo Bangladesh border. The entry fee to this place is a meager ten rupees per person which in turn presents you with an invaluable experience.
Mawlynnong:
The quiet of the brooding Mawlynnong jungle is interrupted by the sound of the Mawlynnong waterfall. This is the perfect place to relax after a long day of sightseeing and to have a picnic with your close ones. The chirps of epiphany, a major attraction of this village, is an hundred year old structure which stands testimony to time and has still managed to hold its old world charm. Blossoms of red and orange with lots of greenery surround the premises, giving it a regal look.
